Why we're building Oryvy

The first year on the road is the most dangerous year a driver will ever have.

No. 1

Road crashes are the single biggest cause of death for young people aged 15–24.

OECD research, cited by the Department for Transport
4×

Young male drivers are around four times more likely to be killed or seriously injured than drivers over 25.

Department for Transport
800k+

people pass their driving test in Britain every year. Many start in an old, cheap car because insuring anything newer costs so much.

Oryvy market research

What new drivers told us they paid

An older car with fewer safety systems, plus insurance that often costs more than the car. Then servicing, tyres and breakdown cover on top.

CarCar costInsurance, year 1
VW Polo (2004)£1,600£2,900
Peugeot 106 (2012)£2,250£2,200
VW Golf (2008)£3,400£3,800
Ford Fiesta (2013)£3,700£4,100
Vauxhall Corsa (2015)£4,900£3,500

Why is insurance so expensive for new drivers?

The biggest cost

Injury claims. When someone is hurt in a crash, the cost of their treatment, care and compensation can run to hundreds of thousands of pounds, far more than repairing a car.

The risk

New drivers are more likely to crash, and most start in older cars with fewer safety systems. In an older car, the same crash is more likely to cause serious injuries.

Our answer

A new car with modern crash protection and automatic emergency braking, plus a co-pilot that coaches safer driving. Fewer crashes, and less serious ones, is how insurance comes down.

The Oryvy coach

Every drive becomes a lesson.

Most apps give you a score for braking, speed and cornering. Oryvy works out where your real risks are, shows you why they matter in short video lessons, and gives you one thing to practise next.

Where the risk is

Your risky moments, on your roads

We pick out the situations behind most young-driver crashes and show you where they happen on your own routes.

  • Junctions and roundabouts
  • Rural roads and blind bends
  • Driving at night
  • A car full of friends
  • Picking up your phone
Why it matters

Two-to-three-minute video lessons

Each lesson explains what goes wrong in real crashes and why, using the road you actually drove. Learners can watch with their parents or guardians.

How to improve

One clear goal for your next drive

A specific thing to practise, set with your guardian and tracked until it sticks. Lessons build from learner to your first year on your own.

The launch range

Six small cars, chosen for safety and sensible insurance.

Indicative launch prices per month including VAT. Your final price depends on the car and the driver's age, and is confirmed before anything is signed.

For parents & guardians

Know where they are. Help them get better.

You taught them to drive. Guardian mode keeps you part of their learning from the first practice drive through the riskiest first year, and puts them in a new car built to protect them.

“Younger drivers are vulnerable road users and have high costs to deal with when they start out. New initiatives like Oryvy that gives younger people greater access to vehicles with more in-car safety technology should be a real step forward.”

How Oryvy makes young drivers safer

Three things that cut the number and the severity of crashes.

Newer cars

A new car with modern safety

Automatic emergency braking and modern crash structures mean the same bump is far less likely to become an injury.

Guardian in the loop

Parents and guardians stay involved

Novice crash rates fall when a parent or guardian stays engaged after the test. Guardian mode keeps that going through the riskiest year.

Learning that carries on

From learner to first year

The same car, cover and coach from the first practice drive through the first year after the test, when crash risk is highest.

Questions

Good questions, straight answers.

Who can get an Oryvy car?

Learners aged 17 and over with a provisional licence, and new drivers. Under 18s need a parent or guardian to hold the account.

Can I use it while I'm still learning?

Yes. You're insured on your provisional licence when you practise with a supervising driver, and your cover carries on the day you pass. By law a supervising driver must be at least 21 and have held a full licence for three years.

How long do I have to keep it?

Oryvy is a flexible monthly subscription, not a three- or four-year finance agreement. We'll confirm the minimum term and notice period before you sign anything.

Is the deposit really refundable?

Yes. The £50 deposit is refundable in full at any time before your subscription starts. If you go ahead, you get £100 off your first month.

What can parents and guardians see?

Where the car is while it's being driven, arrival messages, alerts for risky driving, trip summaries and lesson progress. Drivers can see exactly what is shared with their guardian.

When do you launch, and where?

We're opening to founding members first. Join the waitlist and we'll tell you the date and areas as soon as they're confirmed.

How does it compare with buying a car and insuring it?

Buying a used car and insuring a new driver often costs thousands up front in the first year, with learner cover, servicing and repairs on top. Oryvy spreads it into one monthly price for a new, safer car with no upfront car cost, and safer driving earns better pricing over time.
